Purpose of This Guide
This article provides students with clear guidance on how to obtain, install, and use the software and technology tools that may be required for participation in Harris Digital Learning (HDL) eCourses.
Detailed minimum technical requirements (devices, browsers, internet speed, and system specifications) are available on our eCourses Technical Requirements page. This guide focuses specifically on accessing and acquiring the tools referenced in those requirements.
Required and Commonly Used Software
The following software tools are commonly used across HDL eCourses. All options listed below are free or low-cost unless otherwise noted.
PDF Reader
Some course materials are provided as PDF documents.
Recommended Option (Free):
Adobe Acrobat Reader

Most modern web browsers also include built-in PDF viewing functionality.
Office Suite (Documents, Spreadsheets, Presentations)
Students may be asked to view or create documents, spreadsheets, or presentations.

Audio and Recording Tools (Course-Specific)
Some courses (e.g., world languages, speech, or electives) may require students to record audio.
Microphone
Built-in microphones on laptops and tablets are usually sufficient.
External USB headsets or microphones may improve sound quality.

No specialized or proprietary microphone is required unless explicitly stated in the course.
Live Classroom / Video Conferencing
Students enrolled in courses taught by Harris Digital Learning teachers may participate in live lessons, tutoring sessions, or other synchronous instruction delivered through Zoom meeting rooms.
Zoom Video Conferencing
Zoom account or paid license is NOT required for students to attend live sessions.
Sessions may be joined directly through a web browser or by using the Zoom application.

While Zoom can be launched in a browser, installing the Zoom application may provide a more stable experience, particularly for longer live sessions.
Device and Platform Guidance
Computer vs. Mobile Device Use
Desktop or laptop computers (Windows or macOS) are recommended for full course functionality.

Writing-intensive assignments
Advanced assessments
File uploads or downloads
Interactive course tools
For best results, students should plan to complete most coursework on a computer.

Chromebooks: Supported for most activities
iOS and Android: Limited support; not recommended as primary devices

Internet Access and Low-Cost Technology Options
Harris Digital Learning is committed to supporting equitable access.
Students who do not have reliable technology or internet access are encouraged to explore the following options:
No-Cost or Low-Cost Access Options
Local public libraries – Computer and Wi-Fi access
School or district technology loan programs – Laptops, hotspots, or peripherals
Community centers or learning hubs – Internet-enabled workstations
Free student software licenses – Microsoft Office 365, Google Workspace
Students should contact their school administrator, counselor, or program coordinator to ask about available support options.
Installation, Setup, and Troubleshooting
Before beginning coursework, students should:

Install required software using the links above.
Run the HDL compatibility test to confirm device readiness.
Confirm browser settings (e.g., pop-up blockers disabled as required).
